Health and fitness has always been a very major part of my life. So much so, that after college I opted for a career in the dietary supplements and sports nutrition industry.
I started in a lab testing purity of raw materials and finished products, and worked my up to an executive level running Research & Development of an international supplement company. I was fully immersed in the industry, not only as a professional, but also as a consumer. I was constantly trying different products and approaches to nutrition, as I continually worked to reach my own personal health goals. |
After years of working in the field, I'd become very familiar with the patterns of diet trends and exercise crazes that come and go, rapidly gaining popularity then quickly puttering out.
I'd even tried most of them myself, always chasing the idea of optimal performance or a seemingly unattainable physique. As each new thing came out I'd give it a shot, and when it proved unsuccessful I'd label it as a passing trend. |
So when I first heard of the ketogenic diet, that's all I thought it was. Another crazy trend, and a REALLY crazy one at that! I meant who would even want to give up carbs??
Needless to say I had my doubts, but I still couldn't resist the urge to research the hell out of it and much to my surprise, the science supporting it was actually there. In fact, a lot of evidence was suggesting that this was anything but a trend. Or if it was, it was the longest standing trend in human history, dating back to our evolutionary beginnings. And aside from that, the recorded health benefits that resulted from adopting the ketogenic diet were almost unbelievable. But again, the science was there. Either way though, I remained convinced that this diet was absolutely not for me.

You see, I've always had a little bit of a problem with carbs... |
Well, carbs in general, sugar in particular. I didn’t think there was a chance in hell that I’d ever actually be able to successfully cut carbs out of my diet entirely.
|
I always tried to eat relatively healthy (or what I thought was healthy) and even outside of my professional career, my world revolved around health and wellness, stemming from “healthy” eating habits and the importance of an active lifestyle instilled into me as a child.
But even with all my focus on healthy eating and fitness, there was no denying that I still had a very serious problem with sweets. I justified my overindulgences, thinking I could “get away with it” by being such an active person. |
It wasn’t until well into my keto journey that I could look back and identify the pervasive problem for what it was:
...a very real addiction to sugar.
I can only call it denial, because there is nothing healthy about devouring an entire bag of Muddy Buddies, with a total of 1,300 Calories, 200 grams of carbs, and a whopping 90 grams of sugar. In one sitting. On the regular.
My carb and sugar addiction was SERIOUS. The phrase ‘sweet tooth’ didn’t even cover it. I had a sweet jaw! When I finally made the “mistake” of reading the label after one of my full-bag benders, it blew my mind to realize how much sugar I’d been consuming. And so often! That’s when I finally had a lightbulb moment and realized that I was a little out of control. |
Around the same time, I had a friend trying to talk me into doing a 21-day Keto Diet challenge. So, with the revelation of my sugar-addiction spurring me onward, I decided what the hell! It’s worth a shot at least. Mainly just to see if I could even do it (which I had serious doubts about) but also in hopes of somehow curbing my insatiable sweet tooth.
I won’t lie, the transition for me was pretty rough considering the severity of my addiction. I literally went through withdrawal. But I came out the other end a totally changed person. Keto has transformed my life in too many ways to count. Even by the end of the 21-day challenge, when I was still learning how to make it a sustainable lifestyle that worked for me, I knew I’d never go back to the way of the standard American diet again.
The changes I’ve seen in myself, and the benefits to my overall health I’ve experienced by adopting a keto lifestyle have literally been life changing. Most people who have heard of the ketogenic diet have heard about its ability to produce amazing results with weight loss. When I found keto though, I found so much more than that! |
I found a new level of energy and focus, like I’d been living in a fog my whole life and it had finally lifted.
I learned the truth about the dangerous effects of sugar and why I was never able to accomplish what I wanted while eating a high-carbohydrate diet. I started feeling better, my skin cleared up, my nearly constant digestive issues disappeared. I could literally go on and on about all the benefits I experienced, but I’ll spare you that. |
In a nut shell though, I finally realized what it was to feel truly healthy, and feeling that good gave me a new level of confidence I’d never known before.
Finally kicking my sugar addiction completely changed my life. And all through nutrition! |
Don't get me wrong...
I still believe that dietary supplements can have great effect on someone’s health. But I also now believe that you don’t necessarily have to go that route. The human body is a well-equipped, resilient, self-reliant machine. It is fully capable of reaching a state of optimal function and performance through nutrition alone. And you don’t need to drop buckets of your hard earned money to do it!
The food you eat is the fuel and if you fuel your body efficiently, it will run efficiently on its own, like the well-oiled, sophisticated machine that it is.
Unfortunately, the truth of your body’s own efficiency has been obscured by inaccurate information, biased marketing schemes, and misguided dietary guidelines. The real problem is that without knowing any better, the vast majority of people are operating under the assumption that they’re making “healthy” food choices when they actually aren’t.
The more I studied the ketogenic diet, and experimented with different approaches, the more I realized how misguided my dietary habits had always been. I felt like I'd been duped by the high-carb industry. All the 'heart healthy' product pitches, and 'whole grains' mumbo jumbo, effectively fooling me into sabotaging my own efforts to find health and wellness.
